Artist Name: Alice Shepherd (Artwork Cubed)
Medium/Technique: Kiln-Formed Glass
A native Nashvillian, born third generation “Alice” and a maker since childhood, Shepherd began her kiln-formed glass practice in 2007. In 2011 she started Artwork Cubed as a full-time practice from the glass studio she and her husband built at their home. Nashville Arts Magazine covered her ARTable 2015 presentation and Arts at the Airport holds one of her pieces in their permanent collection. In 2016 her work was shown in a juried exhibit at Centennial Arts Center. She has also shown at Oz Arts Nashville and Seed Space.
My “Seasons in Glass” collection is inspired by the textures, light and colors of nature and her changing seasons. Each handmade, kiln-formed creation combines multiple techniques (e.g., fusing, melting, draping, slumping, casting) which require several carefully planned firings, each lasting between twelve to twenty-four hours.
As I reflect on this body of work I see a few of my favorite things: the earth and galaxies viewed from space, her sparkling gemstones, jam and homemade wine from the fall harvest of backyard grapes, sunsets glowing through early autumn leaves…I hope the pieces evoke your own personal, special experiences!
